Shock as Orbán Allies Acquire Hungary's Leading Newspaper

Media professionals at Hungary's most-read publication have shown disbelief after a media conglomerate viewed as friendly to nationalist prime minister Viktor Orbán's political faction, Fidesz, bought the tabloid from its earlier Swiss owners.

Timing of Purchase

The buyout, which occurs while Hungary gears up for crucial elections next year, is widely seen as another move to expand government influence on the press.

A pro-Orbán media group, Indamedia, declared on Friday it had acquired a collection of Hungarian titles, including the fashion publication and Blikk, a influential daily newspaper whose news site attracts approximately three million online readers monthly.

Management Changes

Blikk's departing top editor, Ivan Zolt Nagy, stated on Monday that he and a top executive were leaving in "mutual agreement" with the acquiring company.

They were appointed seven months ago to reposition Blikk, "focusing not on sensationalism but on interesting stories" and to be "more public-oriented, covering political affairs, economic matters, and cultural topics," he said on social media.

Staff Reactions

Workers from Blikk admitted feeling taken aback. "I came close to a medical emergency when I heard the news," stated one reporter, who wished to be unidentified. "For me, this is professionally concerning."

Blikk has announced a fresh chief editor, Baláz Kolossváry.

Media Landscape Concerns

Several media professionals who have opted to continue acknowledge feeling in a difficult position as there are not many other publications left to which they could apply.

Over the past 15 years, Orbán has been able to use a sprawling government-supporting news ecosystem to boost his image and poll numbers.

Political Context

While important publication transactions have typically occurred either following voting or during a calm political phase, the purchase of Ringier Hungary happens less than six months ahead of April's national vote.

Blikk was viewed as a main goal for Orbán and his party at a moment when surveys are indicating that they have a real challenger for the initial occasion in over a decade.

Opposition Reaction

The opposition leader, Péter Magyar, whose Tisza political group is promoting promises to root out deep-seated corruption, has been vocal about Orbán's "media machine" and the harm he says it has affected Hungary's democratic system.

He has condemned the Ringier Hungary deal, stating it constitutes another attempt by Orbán to solidify his influence over Hungary's news publications.

Newspaper's Significance

Although Blikk is a daily publication, famous for its entertainment section and over-the-top headlines, in the past few years it has also published numerous articles on suspected graft.

"The publication represents by far the most read daily publication in Hungary, a industry frontrunner," stated a press expert. "Their digital platform has become remarkably well-received in the past few years, becoming the fourth most read digital platform in Hungary. If propaganda features in such widely read and mainstream outlets, it will have an impact on the citizenry."

International Perspective

For more than a decade now, Hungary has served as a blueprint for other "authoritarian-leaning governments" globally.

Ex-US administrators and their allies have long praised Orbán's Hungary even as it falls in media freedom indexes.

In 2022, Orbán told a conference of US right-leaning politicians that the way to governance required "controlling media outlets."

Historical Press Regulation

In 2010, Orbán's administration enacted a regulation that imposed state authority over the main media regulator and positioned the public broadcaster in the management of loyalists.

Proprietorship Information

Indamedia is 50% owned by Mikló Vaszily, a state-aligned businessman who is also top executive of a government-friendly television station.

In a declaration, Indamedia's other co-owner and CEO, Gábor Ziegler, stated: "Through the acquisition of Ringier Hungary, the company is acquiring a profitable press organization of comparable scale to Indamedia, with established industry presence and popular products that play a defining role in the Hungarian communications sector."

Ringier announced in a communication that its determination to transfer was "based solely on strategic economic considerations and our concentration on our main internet businesses in Hungary."

A official representative was approached for comment.
