{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces dangerous incident with Formula 1 safety personnel
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two safety personnel crossed the track right in his path
The dangerous situation occurred on the third rotation when marshals were seen on the track as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to swap his compromised front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"
"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two guys running across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Evidently there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track track officials can be allowed to just dash across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the events
"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was advised that fragments were located on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the FIA
"On lap three, track officials were alerted and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once all cars had passed"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send personnel were withdrawn and a caution signal was shown in that zone"
"We are still investigating what happened following that moment"
